But this is also about plain old simple fun. Yes, we care a great deal about educational values, sustainability, improving motor skills and of course health and safety. Yet, at the end of the day, this is about toys and that means playing. Playing is fun - end of story!
We gave up full-time playing many, many moons ago. Back then, toys were just about anything and everything. Pieces of paper and some pens, tins and a string or even just a handful of wooden pegs. Off we went, into our own little worlds. Full of ideas and imagination, we created our toys and with them our stories. Those are memories we cherish.
Today it seems, most of this has been lost. In a world where ready-made, single purpose toys rule, we're running the risk of leaving creativity and imagination behind. Strange as it may seem, but the idea that "playing has to be learnt" is in fact fast becoming reality.
Stumbling across Kellner Steckfiguren was therefore a bit of a revelation. Here were toys of almost unbelievable simplicity, invoking those past memories (the original designs date back to the late 1920's). A few simple yet lovingly crafted and hand-painted wooden blocks, a handful of rubber connectors, a stick or two and some bits of felt and "Bob's your uncle" or in this case rather "Quiek's your mouse"!
This is plug and play at its simplest, yet best - it really is fun in a box! Quirky characters come to life, a different look every time, no instructions needed or wanted.
It's all about embracing some of those fundamentally good things in life. Fun and play. We hope you'll agree!
Kellner plug-in figures (Steckfiguren) are handmade in Germany from locally grown solid
wood (Beech) and hand painted using harmless, water based paints. The patented
connectors, the “Jummis”, are made from food grade rubber. Instructions have
deliberately been left out - these toys are designed to encourage creativity and put the
child in charge. This range has won the German ‘spiel gut’ and ‘reddot design award’ as
well as the Japanese ‘Good Design Award’.
